Emery Blackwood and August Salt grew up together as friends on Saoirse Island, but then became much more. However, 14 years ago, a fire was started, destroying the Salt apple orchard. On that same night, Emery’s best friend, Lily Morgan, was found dead; and August Salt was accused of murdering her. Soon after, August and his mom left the island without telling anyone. In the meantime, Emery continues to live on the island. After her mother passes away, Emery takes over the tea shop. Now, August has returned to bury his own mother on the island and to organize the sale of his mother’s cabin. The townspeople still believe August is a murderer, although there was never any proof, and make threats to get him to leave. Seeing August back in town, Emery goes looking for answers to Lily’s murder and uncovers even more secrets. This is not at all a spooky book, but it’s very atmospheric. It also talks about spells and witches, but there is not a lot of magic. I was really rooting for Emery and August to get back together, while also wanting to know who killed Lily. Overall, this was such a great story, and I found myself savoring the last few chapters.

Not bad at all, just not my cup of tea. The FMC is a little dumb, but it is more like willing naivety. The MMC is boring, and also a little dumb. The rest of the characters have no depth to them. The thing that kept me reading was the atmosphere, the island and its magic drew me in. I wish we had delved more into those things. When I think of stories personifying a setting, I expect the setting to play a bigger role. Same with the magic, its mentioned quite a bit, but hardly shown at all.
I don't know if it was supposed to be a big reveal that the council, and more specifically the old lady, are behind things, but it was obvious. Same with the twist of how Lily died, it wasn't shocking. These revelations were kinda unsatisfying, there was a lot of build up into trying to unravel things, and it didn't really pay off to me.
The writing is well done.
