For a book with “spells” in the name, it sure is lacking magic.
Super lackluster unfortunately. It had a lot of potential, but unfortunately, it missed the mark for me. :(

slowness seemed to make it drag on, made worse by the constant build-up of suspense surrounding unknown mysteries. suspense dragged on a little too long, almost lost my patience and to abandon in the DNF pile

Okay so I thought this I was amazing however I do have some things to say:

I absolutely loved the split POVs. It brought a whole new level of mystery which then brought on more questions.

I also found myself putting my book down and starring at a wall trying to put the pieces together. I wanted so desperately to figure it out before the end of the book and although I did, I went through a lot of unconventional thoughts and note taking lol.

As far as what I didn’t like, there was a lot of crying about nothing. I get the trauma that causes Emery to feel the way she does and the bond her and August share make that ten-fold but I found it a little over done and kind of annoying.

As far as vibes go, where I live it is currently August and 94 degrees outside yet I unpacked all my fall decorations. NOT EVEN THE HALLOWEEN ONES.

All this to say 4.5⭐️

I liked this a lot more than I would a standard thriller. The magic element added a LOT to the story for me, and the way the story slowly unravelled was great as well. It did drag a little at points, but not enough for it to be 3 star.

I liked the premise of the book, but it was fairly obvious how it was going to end, and I kept wondering
how no one in the town did not suspect magic from the very start of the investigation.

There were enjoyable things about this book, but I did not enjoy this one as much as her other books.

I don't typically go for realistic fantasy, but this was beautifully heavy. The island, the characters, the magic, the mystery--all of the parts just worked so well together. I wish they had dwelt more on the rot of the island, but I liked it nonetheless.
