This is the second book by Adrienne Young that I’ve read and it’s the second one I’ve loved. She writes about themes surrounding time and magical realism so well. The individual plot points of this book are relatively simple but the depth is there and despite some chapters being pretty much for vibes, it was still a page turner for me. The conflict/mystery was predictable but I don’t mind being right; after all, the simplest solution is often best and there were enough additional details that it didn’t feel boring.
This book is one of the very few second chances romances that you’ll see me championing, but the romance was well done. The book was heavier on the romance than I was expecting, but still predominantly a mystery. One thing that I appreciate about the way the romance was told (besides the fact that it’s refreshing to read about a 32-year-old’s take on love instead of that of a 19-year-old) was that we were reading about the effects on the characters and the sense of autopilot that they fell into.
The spooky, magical, small town island in the Pacific Northwest near Samhain vibes were a lot of fun and this would make a great October read.

2.5 out of 5 stars rounded down to 2 because I don’t understand the glowing reviews.
This was a confusing read.
I was expecting something else entirely and what I got wasn’t what I wanted.
For something that claims to be adult mystery thriller and a romance it was definitely not any of those things.
It read like a YA kinda magical fiction? I don’t know I’m confused!
The adults are cult like, vengeful, entitled, naive and you can’t possibly like any of them. They’re all acting like teenagers with secrets all the time.
The romance? Nonexistent, it was all tell but not show and I didn’t see the appeal.
The mystery? Aside from the whole atmospheric setting, this was literally 200+ pages of unnecessary petty drama.
And the magic aspect of it all? It was literally non existent, some mentions of it and that’s all.
Are you kidding me?
I didn’t want to rate it any less because some parts are quite interesting and I liked the atmosphere but other than that nothing else really worked for me.
Thank you NetGalley and Simon & Quercus for the digital ARC.

This is one of those books that leaves you saying “that was just a great story”. These are so hard to come by these days, but gems like this can still be found. In my top 10 of the year, guaranteed.

The most interesting parts of the book (the murder and the magic) were the smallest part of the story and that was disappointing
