If a book already starts with people being ripped to pieces, you know I'm going to be into it.
Woowee, was this violent! Definitely one of the more mature reads I have available in my library. Strong-minded young adults will take a lot away from this one.
While this is a duology, book one wraps up nicely and could be a stand alone. Grades 8 and up.

I don’t know quite what to say about this because I don’t think it knew whether it wanted to be YA or adult fantasy. It was a bit too long for YA, but the subject matter and the pacing were YA. There were several times that I thought mysteries were introduced and resolved way too quickly, and there was a bit of deus ex at the end, but I found myself thinking about the characters for a while after I was done. Ultimately, I think it feels like a “first novel,” and the author has a lot of potential.
That was so empowering to read as a young women. It talks about so many important topics but has such a unique story and world to read about while covering those topics. Definitely recommend to anyone that loves a good fantasy world but also that tackle real world problems at the same time.
I liked the premise and themes of this book, but I felt like the protagonist became too powerful too quickly (I would have loved to see the same development over several books), and some of the themes were hit on a little too hard.
3.5 - this was good, it started out as a young adult fantasy with some pretty common tropes, such as the chosen one, etc, but as it progressed, I enjoyed the storyline and loved what happened at the end, so I'm looking forward to the second one. Loved the found family feel and their powers were pretty cool, but the writing was a little fluffy for me. Overall, a pretty good fantasy.
I LOVE THIS BOOK !! It gave me The Grace Year vibes honestly. I read it in like a day. I absolutely love and appreciate literature like this - ones that display important conversations of race, sex, and so much more. I think one of my most favorite parts of the book was the theme of sisterhood. It was absolutely beautiful. But also, the romance started out as a unconditional partnership that then developed into love - that in of itself was beautiful as well. I cannot wait for a second book!!!
Fascinating storyline- the characters are full of depth- the concept if so so good. So excited for the rest of the series!
Definitely enjoyed this one! Enough suspense & excitement to keep me coming back. I’m not usually a YA reader but still enjoyed the sweetness of the young love in this book. I never felt like I could fully get into the world so maybe lacking a bit of detail or “world building” there but loved the twist and would likely read the next book as well.
