I can see how this can be a five star book for some people, but for me it just didn't connect.
In the beginning, I was pretty interested because of the events that happened, but the more the story continued, my interest just grew less and less.
I didn't find there to be enough character development and facts and explanations were brought to you without any subtlety. I'm glad this book was kind of a finished story of its own, so I don't think I'll be reading the sequels.

I loved this book.

The rage. Omg the rage in this book. The righteous rage because the horrors done to women to keep them bowed.

I loved Deka’s journey, as she went from hating herself to realising the truth.

The found family feels are strong in this one.

I was less invested in the romance, but I didn’t dislike it.

The ending felt a tad rushed, but there was much satisfaction there, too.

Can’t wait to read the next one

I enjoyed my reading of this book, however, I kept wanting more details and that made the reading process frustrating at times.

A fun coming of age adventure with some unique twists!

A Christmas gift from my little sister! First time really diving headfirst into fantasy and I enjoyed it. The action and the plot twists all happen in the last 100 pages but the first 300 include a lot of world building and series set up.

Amazing world building and fantasy story with a beautifully crafted romance and found family.

Deka, at sixteen years old, is set to go through the blood ceremony that, she hopes, will reveal her blood to be red- an indicator that she fits into her village. Her destiny is to be something more though as is revealed when her blood runs golden and the village elders kill her. And then kill her again. Over and over again as she revives from terrible deaths.

When a mysterious woman intervenes on her behalf, Deka is given the choice to join an army of girls like her and to protect the empire from deathshrieks- dangerous creatures that must be kept at bay.

I really enjoyed this book. I liked Deka and her journey from uncertainty into a warrior with the support of her fellow alaki. There was a plot twist that I didn't anticipate which I always appreciate. However... When I look at reviews from other readers though I feel as though I should go back and reassess my stance. Others mention issues with the portrayal of females and with unnecessary violence. I think this is one where you will have to simply read for yourself to decide if it is worthy of all the praise that has been heaped on it to this point. As for me, I look forward to reading the second one when it is published.
