Reviewing books I haven’t loved is hard. Maybe I am too much enamoured with Shakespeare but I found the retelling didn’t map well, and some additions seemed superfluous. I found the prose quite inelegant, again, perhaps I spend too much time burying my head in classics. Objectively I think this is more like a three star book. I think my problems also come from some small elements that just didn’t sit right with me, like the video game. And as a player couldn’t help find it grating because it just seemed the author didn’t know a thing about video games and their content. But perhaps that’s in the rather (deliberately) dislikable male characters.

Not a book I would have read on my own. Too melodramatic, but then, it tells you beforehand it's based on Shakespeare, doesn't it?
If it was not for that, for the directness of it telling you is based on a previous work, this novel can well stand alone.
As a XXI century retelling it is quite great and it is because of that, that the XXI century elements are so well connected with the story, that this novel could just stand on its own.
However, all melodrama that can be found now is in one way or another a retelling of a retelling of Shakespeare.

This story held together as a modern retelling of the Winter's Tale, but wasn't a favorite in this contemporary series. It was quite graphic. I suspect that some of Shakespeare was quite graphic when first performed too, but this novel felt unnecessarily so. I did appreciate the depth of several characters that were developed. But, overall, only forced myself to finish this book instead of enjoying very much of it.
