Oh Jackson. Poor, poor Jackson. Ellery you have the patience of a saint. Jackson has has such a rough past and a lot of it comes to a head in this book, but it also gives him the most chance for growth in his relationship with Ellery. I like these two and their determination to figure out what caused all the trouble and not take the easy answer when it's presented. These stories are by no means light and fluffy. There's definitely a darker side at play here and it makes me really hope for more of the light to find Jackson. He deserves it. I appreciated Ellery's devotion to the man he loves. Through thick and thin he's going to prove to Jackson that nothing will make him leave.

The mystery/thriller aspects of this story pick up right from where the last book left off. There's still a killer on the loose and he's started to get a bit of an unholy obsession with Jackson. I shudder to think of all the damage Jackson does to his body with his disregard for his own personal safety in this story. Again, Ellery has the patience of a saint. Still there were some new avenues opened up in this story that I can't wait to see how get resolved in the next book.

Me... swooning so hard for these two men

Also Me: A total simp for Ellery
Wants to put Jackson in bubble wrap
and protect him forever.

Me: Crying over how beautiful this relationship is

ALSO ME: Jackson you sensitive IDIOT he walked HOME.

Me: Crying with Ellery when Jakson is hurt and crying with Jackson when Ellery is in danger because HE GOT ATTACHED AND THIS ONE IS MINE.

And don't get me started about Lucy Satan and Billi Bob.

AND THE STEAM GOOD LORDT.

WOW.

Just wow. This might be one of the best things I have read/heard from Amy Lane - and that's saying a lot since everything the woman writes is pretty spectacular.

I love Jackson and Ellery, how great they are together, how strong Ellery can be and allowing Jackson to take that comfort and let his guard down, how they snark and bitch but totally get each other.

And Jackson. Jackson is gonna break your heart in this one, what he goes through and has gone through in the past will totally break you, but he has Ellery now, and a whole family of his friends and now Ellery's mom (Lucy Satan is the very best) and he's gonna be okay, he just needs some TLC to get there.

There is plenty of plot AND romance in this one. And Greg does a perfect job narrating this one as well. There are also 4 short stories at the end of this story (I almost wish they had been at the beginning? Since they span books 1 and 2) and introduces some of the characters from Racing for the Sun, which this series overlaps with.

Can't wait to start book 3!

ETA 10/28/19 - re-listening to this series again to refresh and prepare for the newest book in the series, Fish on a Bicycle! (although, that one's not out in audio and there's no ETA on it since DSP is all f-ed up right now) Just as amazing the second time listening! Jackson and Ellery are my OTP!

This book starts at full throttle and seriously never lets up.

Jackson and Ellery are living together while Jackson's place is still being fixed up and to say things are tense would be an understatement. Ellery would like to make this a permanent arrangement but of course Jackson is fighting it for all the wrong reasons.

Jackson Rivers is probably one of the most stubborn characters I have read and I equally want to slap him upside the head and give him a hug. But is also why I really enjoy these books.

I'm also a fan of books that not only have strong MC's, but have great fully fleshed out secondary characters as well. Jackson's and Ellery's extended families add so much to the story, not only for amusement but also realism.

Greg Tremblay once again does a great job of adding life and depth to the words that Lane has put down on paper. He does a fantastic job of conveying everything that the MC's are feeling and thinking through his tone and delivery.

3.5 I think?

It was entertaining, they were chasing the serial killer who escaped in book 1 and the chase was good. The book mentioned the couple from another book ([b:Racing for the Sun|17700033|Racing for the Sun|Amy Lane|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1364528086l/17700033._SX50_.jpg|24744064]) which I read only to be told at the very end of the book that the events mentioned involving these other characters had taken place in a short story that was available somewhere else. That made me mad lol.

Anyway, I like Jackson and his insecurities, but Ellery confuses me I just can't pin his character down. And I like him but he is so pushy, the narration tells us it's what Jackson needs, but it pisses me off at times. but also he is not entirely wrong as Jackson spends these books getting into life-threatening danger and going to the hospital, so the man def needs a keeper.

They're both in love now, so I guess I'll see what kind of relationship drama keeps the next 5 books interesting romance-wise?

also my brain keeps auto-correction Ellery into Celery and I can't take him seriously anymore

Reread/Relisten: December 2023

When family is in town for the holidays it really puts a halt on reading haha

Love this book like the original time I read it, and just like the first time I wanted to smack Jackson right up the head haha!

It’s impressive how patient Ellory is! Now finally on to book 3! Haha

Original Read/Listen: April 2021

Audio: 5 stars Greg B/T is amazing as always!
Book: 4.5 stars

The action and suspense in this was better than book one.

I will say in the middle of the book I wanted to smack Jackson upside the head. He didn’t realize that he had people who cared if he lived or died and decided to go guns ablazing on his own.... if I could have shaken sense in to him I would have!

But really I enjoyed this book and I can’t wait to see how book three turns out!

Loved it. I’m invested in their relationship, i totally believe their love for each other, and everything the characters did to advance the plot MADE SENSE. There was delicious angst, but also a hefty dose of time after the final confrontation that wrapped up the book and left me feeling like my characters were in something of a good place.
