My first Lovecraft. A little surprised that it had a greater affinity with 19thC gothic fiction than 20thC modern fiction. I saw many parallels with Frankenstein including the frozen polar wastes, the folly of playing god, and a reported, epistolary narrative. There is however surprisingly little plot compared with the amount of detailed world-creation. Architecture and geology feature more prominently than any character, so if you're a fan, this is for you.

Kind of the opposite of the Burroughs books I've been reading this year, where it takes a while to lock in and then it's a straight banger. This one had an absolutely riveting first couple chapters, maybe especially so because I very much am into natural history and understood all the lingo. But the meat and potatoes of the story really didn't grab me quite as well.

The language is pretty dense and hard to follow, and I feel like the climax was ok but not fantastic. Maybe this stuff isn't creepy and horrific by today's standards.

I found the first half very fun, mysterious and kinda spooky, uncovering the mysteries surrounding the mountains at first. A decent slow burn and I very much got "The Thing" vibes which this novel may of inspired the "The Thing". As the plot moves forward and we start to uncover the source of the mystery, the story started to lose me. Complex cosmic politics and impossible creatures are great but it all felt very rushed and brushed over quickly. I got into one paragraph and had to read it 3 times to understand what is even happening and was still left unsatisfied. I can see how HP Lovecraft has spawned so much media from his works like At The Mountains of Madness, but the second half of this book left me confused and unstatisfied. But I doubt i would be able to understand such complex cosmic beings that emerge from lovecrafts head anyway.
