I feel so stupid for barely understanding anything. For me it got so confusing and i felt so bored all the time while listening to it.

Too boring and just never got to the point. Perhaps this wasn't the best H.P. Lovecraft story to start with, I'm doubtful that I will attempt to read anything else from him for a lon  time.

I can respect that H. P. Lovecraft was a pioneer of his time and his world building abilities are great.

However his writing feels dense and repetitive which left me feeling uninterested and lost. The most exciting part was
when we finally got to hear about the cosmic horrors/ancient city.
but that was over halfway through the book.

I like the premise of this story. Love weird lit. Love horror/cosmic horror. This just didn’t live up to what I thought it would be.

One of the literary criticisms of Lovecraft I’ve heard are about his limited vocabulary, and with a story as long as this you can really notice that: he uses the same few phrases and words a dozen times throughout the story, and it’s a bit distracting at times.

This story is strengthened by its discussion of the creatures as human-esque in their society and beliefs and culture, and I appreciate that that concept is juxtaposed with the physical horror the characters feel when met with one of the creatures whose culture they had just been appreciating.

After reading (and listening to the audiobook, because yes it really was that hard to get through) to 25%, i decided to check out the reviews for this book, and it was no shocker to me to find out that everyone else felt like this book is manly about worldbuilding than about a recently awaken alien civilization.

The reader picks up this book reads the sinopsys that describes this murderous unearthly expedition, reads the introduction that talks of Lovecraft like some inventor of modern horror fiction and instead stumbles upon a geographical study book

No, i don't care that you were healthy at 2:18pm, or if the latitude was 76º 15' and the longitude was 113º 10' East on january 25th or if you were 8,500 feet above sea-level and it was cold outside!
