I'm sorry to say that I didn't enjoy this one as much as I'd hoped. The main plot basically evolves around the main character behaving in a way I disagree with. For the greater good etc, but I still didn't like it. The rest was nice enough easy going fluff, but this was a no go for me for some reason.

I enjoyed the story but the writing felt a bit off some times.
Like a student trying to get to a certain word count, people were way too often referred to as 'the other woman' instead of just 'she' or their names.

Fancy a swim now though.

The Wednesday Morning Wild Swim by Jules Wake
Narrated by Laura Brydon

I received an advance review copy for free thanks to NetGalley and HarperCollins and I am leaving this review voluntarily

Ettie is trying to figure out her future.

Dominic’s just trying to forget his past.

But with the help of some unlikely friends, young and old, a secret lake hidden in the grounds of a beautiful estate and a scruffy dog, a new community is formed – right when they all need each other the most.

Ettie sometimes finds it difficult to be truthful but I thought that just added to her charm. Whilst the title suggests this book focuses on the wild swimming there is so much more to this book - Ettie is trying to help Dominic and Gracie turn an estate into a fabulous hotel whilst also trying to help some of the local residents who only seem to be happy when they are wild swimming.

This is my first book by Jules and it was such a delight. I will definitely be back for more. A nice, feel-good read with such welcoming characters.

Ettie (Ethel) Merman has always loved to swim. She was taught by her grandfather and it is something which calms and centres her. Ettie never seemed to have much luck with her jobs though even she couldn’t be blamed for a gas explosion seeing off her previous shop! She hadn’t had much opportunity to develop her skills having had to leave school early to help support her family.

It was obvious to me that she needed to find something she as passionate about and it was brilliant to see her find that passion helping Dominic develop plans for his hotel. She really blossomed given the chance to use her talent and skills.

The wild swimmers at the lake are such a diverse group of people brought to life by Jules Wake in a way that has you rooting for each of them to find what they need to heal. There’s a real spirit of friendship, camaraderie and encouragement.

This is quite a funny book too with the scenes between Ettie and her family providing lots of smiles. Some of the situations Ettie gets herself in are laugh out loud funny. But there’s a poignancy too particularly in her relationship with her grandfather.

One of the characters mentions that to get into the get into the water “you just have to be brave’ and this was a real metaphor for so many of the characters in the book who showed much bravery and courage in some difficult situations. Who would have thought that a weekly swim in a lake would lead to friendship, courage, confidence and, in some cases, love. A real-life changing experience for so many of the characters. The Wednesday Morning Wild Swim is a really feel-good and heart-warming read.

“The Wednesday Morning Wild Swim” by Jules Wake is the perfect comfort read for a gloomy day or just to get out of a reading slump. The book follows the story of Ettie, a 30ish lassie who just hasn’t found the right job for her yet. After her most recent workplace literally blew up (gas leek in a London vintage clothing shop), Ettie packs her bags and goes back home to live with her family (grandad, mother, and sister) in their Yorkshire home. Lucky for her, Dominic, an ex-Navy new house-owner decides to open a bed & breakfast business, and needs an assistant to help out! A the same time, a secret swimming club (secret only for Dominic) gets together to swim in the lake next to Dominic house, despite his forbidding them to do so...

There were so many beautiful moments in this book and all so beautifully narrated that I couldn’t say that one of them is better than the other. I think it helped a lot to have such a variety of characters and having such visual descriptions of how they mix one with another. Although I’m not a native English speaker, I could tell when the narrator, Laura Brydon, was focusing on introducing the Yorkshire dialect and dialect into the reading. It fit so well with the story!

Special thanks to NetGalley, HarperCollins UK Audio, One More Chapter , and the editorial team for giving me the opportunity to review the ARC in audiobook format and to you, my reader, for taking the time to read this honest personal book review.

"When we're swimming, we're just us. People in our own right. It sounds odd, but it's easier to talk about things together, or not talk about them if we don't want to."

I loved my time with the first Yorkshire Escape book when I read it back in 2020 (although I didn't know it was part of a series back then), so of course I knew I HAD to add The Wednesday Morning Wild Swim to my wishlist as soon as I first heard about it. There is something about the way Jules Wake writes her stories that is highly engaging, and I've been meaning to try more of her work. The fact that this story features older characters as well as a group of unlikely friends and a dog is a bonus, and the characters ended up being the main reason this story worked so well for me. It is simply impossible not to like Ettie's character, and I loved her sunny personality and resourcefulness. The rest of the cast is very easy to like as well, and I had such a wonderful time getting to know this unlikely bunch of friends better. The story was more heavy on the romance than expected, and more focus on the actual friendships would have made me enjoy the story even more... But I did like the chemistry between Dominic and Ettie (even though some parts of the plot were a bit too cliche and dramatic). As a whole, The Wednesday Morning Wild Swim turned out to be a mainly uplifting and feel-good contemporary that mixes romance with friendships and overcoming your fears and doubts. I can recommend both books of the series if you like the genre!
