The TV adaptation is my favourite show of all time. This was never going to reach my expectations, but was still enjoyable.
This book was only okay. I didn't enjoy it as much as I'd hoped but I didn't hate it. The ending was stupid.

A truly surprising premise and a skillfully handled plot. Mr. Perrotta imagines what it would be like for the rest of us if a Rapture-like event were to happen, but where the Chosen ones were randomly selected, and they were definitely not the cream of the crop.
I will come back to this after book club on Friday.
6/1 edit: okay so I didn’t go to book club because it was also to talk about the tv show and i didn’t want any spoilers lol. But 3.5 stars, rounded up to 4. I think I’m going to like the show more.

if i were trying to be objective this book would only get maybe 3 stars max, and if i had read this before watching the show (greatest series of all time) i think i would have been bored. ultimately despite the lack of unhinged plot this ended up being a very fun supplementary read and deep dive into the characters i already know and love, so i had a blast!
book kevin feels unfamiliar to his tv show counterpart but it didn’t really bother me much because my #latest favourite character of all time nora durst remains perfect and unpredictable even in this medium.

I enjoyed this book. I appreciate that the author focused on how the characters moved on/coped with their new realities, rather than make the story be about some quest to uncover what happened and how those left behind tried to get their loved ones back. The book explored many different experiences, and while there are certainly religious implications to the story, the novel avoided being preachy from any of the perspectives. I found myself caring about all the main characters, and feeling hopeful in the end. I read the book now because it has been on my TBR since it was released. I'm curious about the new tv show based on the book, and I'm one who prefers to read it before I watch it. I hope the show is as compelling as the book.
Intrigued to read this after watching the 1st 2 seasons of the HBO series. It was fine, encompasses basically S1 but still pretty different from the series. Not sure why either was rated quite so highly
