When I first heard about this book series, everyone seemed to love them. When I heard about them a few months later, everyone seemed to hate them.
So, what do I think about this first part?
I understand why people love it:
- Alex.
- The weirdest combination of side characters.
- A protective brother.
- A few mysteries to solve.
- Some spice.
- Lots of action.
I also understand why people hate it:
- Alex.
- The spicy scènes are not as common as expected.
- You are not involved in most of the build up (in the romance).
- There is nothing 'new' or unique in the story.
- The second part of the book goes quickly.
Let's start with my love-hate-bond with Alex. Because, yes: he is a great character and as a lover he seems very caring. But, and here we go: there is so much depth missing. Don't worry, nothing is a spoiler since all is known from page one. He has a great trauma, but it seems to be solved in one page. Not to mention he is some sort of 'bad guy', but I am not able to find prove of that. He could have been an amazing character, but as a reader; I had to fill in so much. Alex is a flat character and that's not the best for a main character.
The side characters made this book for me, and of course Ava. But the side characters: from some weird as friend to a princess. I had no clue how all those people ended up together but I loved it. They were well written and brought something extra to the story.
Same goes for the brother. He is not as big of a character, but his role is so important. Even when he seems to be a one-man-show, he somehow manages to turn the plot into something a lot more interesting. I hope there is also a book about him because he is a lovely guy.
This book is filled with two big mysteries and they are great! It was hard to figure them out before the characters did. And with all the action (but not too much, which made it the perfect fit for this book) this book doesn't always feel like a romance.
Same as Alex: the spicy has two sides. It is there, but not as much as you would expect it to be. There is so much build-up about Alex being some sort of sex God. But we barely get to see that side. I expected a lot more spicy scènes, and longer ones. So I was a bit disappointing.
Overall, it is a great book, but it is nothing new. I have seen a few romances similar to this one. I also feel like the second part should have been a little more detailed. If so, it might have had that extra seasoning it needed to be a great romance.
Even when I liked the book, I wished it was longer. A little more about their youth, a little more detailed near the end. It would have made this one perfect!
