I had not heard of Victorian author Dinah Craik, until recently. I am happy to have found this book, her most well known, according to Wikipedia.

As the title suggests, John Halifax is the main character of the story, along with Phineas Fletcher, the narrator. We meet these characters in their teens and follow them throughout their lives. For indeed Phineas and John had a Jonathan and David relationship. Even when John married the love of his life, Ursula, John looked after Phineas, who had always been sickly.

For me, it was the right book at the right time.
