Truly astounded.
For almost four years I’ve been wanting to read this book but I couldn’t put myself to it. Until finally a few weeks ago I impulsively bought the book and decided to read it. Regarding language, I’ve always had quite a difficulty deciphering classic literature. However, the dialogue in Dorian Gray was amusing and comprehensible. Before reading the book, the only prior knowledge I had of Dorian Gray was from pop culture references; specifically, the image of the Ben Barnes imprinted on my mind.
The story centers around Basil Hallward, Lord Henry, and Dorian Gray that mirror the distinct reflections of the author Oscar Wilde Himself. In one of the riveting quotes, he states, “Basil Hallward is what I think I am: Lord Henry is what the world thinks me: Dorian is what I would like to be—in other ages, perhaps.” After I finished the book, I found myself confused by Wilde’s quote as I couldn’t understand his glorification of Dorian whom I found to be an embodiment of evil.
I enjoyed the overall plot of the story because of how unexpected the events were and how wrong my assumptions had been. The main elements of this book discussed hedonism and the superficiality of society. The main character Dorian Gray is a muse for Basil Hallward (painter) who Hallward worships for his beauty. Dorian then meets Hallward’s friend Lord Henry and has an eye-opening conversation based on hedonism which seems to be Henry’s philosophy of life.
I actually found all the characters pretty repulsive as their distinct treachery was revealed within each chapter. Lord Henry, in particular, seems to be a big misogynist who views women as nothing more than "decorative sex." However, I have to leave a comment of appraisal for Oscar Wilde's genius writing. I was captivated by every single sentence and the complexity behind its context. I highly recommend this book to lovers of psychological classics and villain archetypes.

The picture of Dorian Gray is the masterpiece I didn't know i needed.
I got into this book without knowing anything about the story, so I suggest you do the same :)
All I want to say is that this story captivated me, the language of it was so beautiful I fell in love with every word.
The dialogs and philosophies were on point, and the characters were written so well.
I would recommend this book to absolutely anyone!
