This book is about all things animals can not do. A Very whimsical alphabet book.

I think I have to look up some of the animals on the letters, but otherwise this is a great way to learn things.

This HUGELY entertaining alphabet book by debut picture book author Anna Lazowski and illustrated by Steph Laberis also has an uplifting message of empowerment for young readers: it's ok not to be good at everything right away, and you can still have fun. Plus the back matter has an alphabetized factoid list of "all the amazing things animals CAN do!" This is an alphabet book that can be appreciated by grown-ups as well as young readers, with lots of potential discussion points. Steph Laberis's illustrations of animals in ridiculous situations are so SOOOOO FUN --- omigosh, even as I'm writing this post, I went back to look through the digital ARC and can't decide which is my favourite, though I'm leaning toward the "Cheetahs can't chew bubble gum" page. Highly recommended.

Really fun illustrations showing animals in silly situations, followed by a spread listing things those same animals can do.

This book opens with a relatable spread showing a child trying pull on a sweater and another child trying to reach a high shelf. The opening rhyme is catchy. And the hilarious things each animal attempts to do will have children laughing. Yaks can't throw yo-yos. What a fun way to realize that struggling with learning things is a universal problem. The ending spread shows that there are many things animals can do and the back matter has a lot of interesting facts. Did you know elephants make their own sunscreen? Fascinating! I appreciate the shift towards positive thinking about what animals can do. This new twist on the alphabet book will be fun for parents and children to enjoy together.
