Well, this was way better than I was expecting. I'm usually not big on animal characters because I find them too cutesy, but I picked this up anyways because of the Hugo award and was pleasantly surprised. Digger is a no-nonsense wombat that, due to an unfortunate run in with a magical tunnel, gets stuck in a strange place where she meets some very strange characters including a statue of a god that can talk and a shadow child. Throughout it all Digger manages to remain practical and takes it all in stride. I seriously debated five stars for this, but I think I'll wait until I finish the whole series to make that call. And I will definitely be hunting the rest of this down.
I haven't read this in ages and it still holds up.
Digger is such a fun protagonist. Very level-headed and affable, and an absolute badass when she needs to be. Remember Tunnel 17, y'all.
Love the mysteries set up in this one. Shadowchild's origins, Ed's backstory, the Veil being kind of shady, and, of course, why the heck Digger got in this world in the first place.
This series is an absolute delight.

I've read the first two chapters in the web. Was intrigued because I saw it described as a mixture between Celebus and Bone with a little bit of Terry Pratchett, which like, come on, is a winner premise.
Unfortunately, I did not find it...intriguing? The world didn't resonate with me as much as Bone did.
The main character’s passivity swings between the charming and the annoying, because at some point it feels like I have to do all of the work to remain engaged here. Unlike Bone, there's not a sense of "entering" a unique land, it's more of a... surreal type of dream-world where the author throws whatever is in her mind.
And that's good! But it's just not taking those ideas right, they feel too much in the loose this early on.
It's overall a cool idea and I bet I would have loved it if I read it in its entirety... but I'm just not in the mood for it right now! You can't please everyone, but please, do check it out, it's got good ideas.

SO CUTE. And creepy, in this very distant soft way. Much love.
There's an extent to which this collection suffers from what I think of as, "Volume One of an Obviously Long-Running Series" problems (hereafter VOOLRS). Ursula spends a little too much time setting things up and introducing us to story threads that aren't completely engaging now, but will obviously be important later.
Now usually, when I read a comic with a case of VOOLRS, I have a debate with myself about whether or not I'll pick up the next volume. In this case, there's no question - I was utterly charmed by Digger-of-Unnecessarily-Convoluted-Tunnels and her fellow travelers in this bizarre world. The art is lovely, the jokes are funny, and the story engaging. I'm making space on the bookshelf for the next five volumes.

I ended up reading it online, because my local libraries don't have it in print. I'm in love with this series -- an excellent, grumpy, pragmatic protagonist, wierd adventures, interesting side characters and fantastic art. Vernon has a gift for creating an engaging story. I feel so involved with the characters that they are constantly having other adventures in the back of my head, as I wait eagerly for the next installment.
Very entertaining and funny. Digger is great. Read online: http://diggercomic.com/blog/2007/02/01/wombat1-gnorf/
