I found this book quite boring compared to the previous one, basically because I only really enjoyed two of the perspectives (i.e. Jamie and Cersei). I found myself skimming some of the Brienne chapters as they were utterly boring. I have now started A Dance with Dragons and happy to report that I’m enjoying it a lot more, and I’m only 100 pages in!

Since I came into this series late, I didn't have to wait years between books. And while I found that focusing on different characters was nice for a change, I did miss all my favorites and wished I knew what was happening with them. Not to mention that this book suffered from the same problem of a dragging plot that the others shared.
I will say that it was nice to get Cersei's perspective for a change. The prophecy did seem like it came out of left field, though. I enjoyed the character development but I wish there was some plot development to go along with it! True some plot was happening, but it mostly felt like subplots dealing with the various characters. The overall plot didn't feel like it was going far.

Audio // the three stars is based off enjoyment. It's a great book. What it's missing: hot fae male romance interests.
I've tried multiple times to get into the TV show, but it never resonated with me. However, the books are a completely different story—I thoroughly enjoyed them. Martin's writing has such a strong voice that perfectly complements the high fantasy genre. The way he blends action with intricate political drama is masterful. His character development builds incredible tension, keeping the reader fully engrossed. I can't wait for him to finish the final books so I can reread the series!

This is where things get controversial. The universe gets expanded a lot, but it also gets way too slow. I remember struggling with the Brienne chapters, I still don't know if they actually led anywhere. The Cercei chapters were probably the best. I also enjoyed Dorne, famously done dirty in the TV adaptation. Why is Arys Oakheart a POV character though? Just to have a sexual description of Arianne? According to a theory, he was supposed to live a little longer and die fighting against Balon Swann or something like that.
Here's the thing, if you are teenage boy influenced by the show like I was at the time, you want important deaths, you want the plot to move forward. This book is more about themes and realistic consequences. There's actually 27 chapters from female POVs against 19 from male POVs, so the book is almost 60% female. That's interesting. Anyway, I would have to read it now to be able to give a proper review.
Read in December, 2013 approx.

Everything happened, and yet nothing at all happened. Wtf. George continues to be a concerningly messed up author.
