4.02 AVERAGE

I gave this 5 stars even though I didn't like it as much as the first 3. This is a very engaging series-- if you have the time to read. Not quite so many deaths of favorite characters in this one but as has been the case in all his books George Martin has no qualms at killing off major characters. Now on to the next.

700 pages and it was only half the story!? oh how I could not put it down (after weeks of not wanting to pick it back up)

Sadly, only giving this a 3 since i was so disappointed that the author simply decided to "omit" certain characters from this book. I didn't like his "meanwhile, back at the wall..." explanation at all.

Flaws of characters a main focus: Yes

This series is getting a little tedious - but for completeness of course I'll read the last one too! I think he is running out of faux-medieval phrases to insert, certain ones got WAY too repetitive, in a way that I didn't notice in the previous books. I do enjoy the way he is willing to kill off main characters very suddenly though!
adventurous challenging dark mysterious sad slow-paced

Septon Merribald's "broken men" monologue alone makes this book an underrated masterpiece. I look forward to it in every reread. It's a perfect little fractal of Martin's brilliance.

This book adds a lot to the worldbuilding and contains some of my favourite character moments in the series. The plot never truly picks up but do we care? NO.
