This middle book of the trilogy has a lot of moving pieces, including characters, intentions, and locations. Be sure to remind yourself of all the characters from the first volume before going into the second, as some characters have multiple names.

I loved the first book but this is getting to be a grind. I don't know if I just read it too soon after Inkheart & should take a break, or if there's something about the structure of these books that just doesn't satisfy as much as the texr accumulates.

I was intrigued by the premise but unlike other YA books I've read (Elsewhere, Twilight before the series went off the rails), I wasn't transported by how it was realized. I read a review (after I read the book) that described the villain as the "Diet Coke of Evil", and I think that's about right—he's evil lite. I liked it enough to want to read the sequel, but not so much that I’m rushing to do so.

I'm always scared that childhood favourites wont stand up to a reread more than 10 years later but I'm happy to say this one did, and I'm looking forward to the next one In the trilogy.
