Just exactly what the doctor ordered - a fun, light-hearted, entertaining read with a delightful cast of characters!
I just love Sparrow's family and all the chaos that make up their household. Each of her sisters have a unique personality, her grandmother is guaranteed to elicit some giggles with her outrageous antics, then there's Sparrow herself, who you can't help but root for as she tries to navigate her way through high school while hiding the fact that she can see & speak to ghosts.
I would highly recommend this book if you're looking for a little escape one afternoon. It would probably be perfect for a lazy afternoon in October. I just wish it was the start of a series, but sadly it does not have a sequel.

Its totally cool that she made an exception (SPOILER!!) to help save Luke. I recommende this book to any girl (or guy but mainly girl unless the guy is gay or very secure with his femmine side... then I'd recommend it to them) Oh, and may the farts be with one. (You gotta read the book to know what I mean.
This is a nice and delightful book. I enjoyed it. It is not your typical YA book.
Incredibly, incredibly wonderful book. Young adult fiction at its very best, I think. It's about Sparrow Delaney and her incredibly zany family that lives on a commune, and her attempt to pass as a norm in school. Oh yeah, she can see spirits. It's an incredibly rough adolescence. All of those pieces sound like a terrible Disney Channel movie, I recognize, but the story is put together very carefully, and each of the characters is individually lovely and interesting. I got it as an advanced reader copy from our review department and finished it in a day, I couldn't put it down.
Ages 11+ (a few mild profanities - 'bullshit' etc - and a hint of romance) Fifteen year old Sparrow Delaney is the seventh daughter of a seventh daughter, and as such is supposed to be blessed with extreme psychic ability. Okay, so she is - she's been seeing ghosts since she was five, no small feat in Lily Dale, NY, the community that the modern day Spirtualist movement calls home. But she's been doggedly hiding her abilities from her mother, grandmother, and six sisters since they manifested. A new school brings a chance for a new start - she hopes. But when she starts seeing the ghost of a teenage boy who will not leave her alone, will she 'come out' in order to help him? A fairly light contemporary fantasy that while slightly predictable will still appeal to tween and younger teen girls.
Don't usually like these type of ghost stories because they are almost all predictable. This was very heart-warming.
I really enjoy Suzanne Harper's style of writing! Her characters are always quirky and a lot of fun to read. Sparrow Delaney, who lives in Lily Dale, NY, a well-known psychic community, is a liar. The seventh daughter of a seventh daughter, she's supposed to have great psychic talent--and she does, but no one knows it. No one except Sparrow (and yes, her other six sisters are all named after birds too) and her three spirit guides. When a school district rezoning gives Sparrow an opportunity to attend another high school--one where no one knows her six more than slightly offbeat older sisters, or her mother or grandmother, or the fact that all eight of them exercise some form of psychic talent--Sparrow jumps at the opportunity. Finally, her chance to be normal! Or is it? When a ghost shows up in her very first class of the year and asks for her help, she begins to have her doubts. A quick, but satisfying read--perfect to squeeze in at the end of the summer!
It took me a couple chapters to actually get into the book. Amazing characters and plot. Really love the character Sparrow.Really. I don't really know how to describe it all. This book turned out be a very unexpected good read!
Check out the book yourself and enjoy the touching incredible story of Sparrow Delaney. Should there be a sequel?

I loved this book as much as I read it the first time. It's a fun story about a young girl trying to find her place in the world. It has the crazy family life, the ghosts, and the boys. There is also a great lesson about forgiveness.
Though, reading it this time around I wonder if it was meant to be a series but it was too midlist to really make it there. Because we never learn what happens to her dad and I kind of want to see Sparrow's powers develop more.
Overall though, it's one of my favorites. The memories were true. Sparrow's voice rang in my head clear and distinct and funny. I don't know how well it would hold up nowadays since it definitely doesn't fit into the current YA trends but I loved it 12 years ago and I love it now.
Conclusion: Keep

Quite slow-paced in the beginning, which is made up for in the end though. Perfect October read for young readers between 13 and 17 , I would say. I first read this when I was 14 and I still really enjoyed rereading it ten years later.
