4.5 stars. Man, what a run!! I loved the relationship dynamic between Ollie/Dinah and Shado and the thread Grell weaves with that relationship as well as the trauma that Dinah suffers in the first arc - these resonate through all 50 issues. There was only one arc I didn't care for, the one in Canada with the IRA and movie, but when you consider this volume is 50 issues, that's a real small blip overall. This is a definite read and one I'd easily recommend as a buy. I can't wait for volume 2....assuming DC doesn't drop the ball on it!

When I first picked this up years ago I was not ready for the gritty nature or this characterization of the Green Arrow. Luckily, I picked it up again years later and had a completely different response. I loved it. The art really serves the story and the story doesn't pull any punches. If you are familiar with the character at all this is required reading. I also recommend the regular series that followed.

We discussed this run, plus the Green Arrow's complicated history in a special episode of the All the Books Show: https://soundcloud.com/allthebooks/episode-233-green-arrow

We get a darker Oliver Queen story in this story by Grell. Dinah and Oliver discuss their future at some point and agree that the dangers of being in the hero business will prevent them from marrying and having children. An underground drug trafficking ring is investigated by Oliver and Dinah an their paths eventually overlap. Oliver also eventually meet Shado in the process and eventually they work together to an extent. If you're looking for classic 80s Oliver Queen, this is probably a good place to start.
