I really enjoyed this haunted house, mystery book that has a very good mix of the supernatural mixed with realistic explanations. As teen-agers, Clare and her friends ventured into a local haunted house, but one friend, Abby, was left forever changed by her time in the house's basement. Now adults, Clare is brought back to her hometown by news that Abby attempted suicide in the house, and she can't rest until she delves into the house's past to uncover what went wrong.

This was an enjoyable book to me, with engrossing writing and a mystery that I wanted to uncover. I'm not usually a fan of a book that switches from first person to third person perspectives, but given that the majority of the book is in 3rd person I will forgive it. My one major gripe with the book is...

WHY DID NO ONE TRY TO PROP OPEN THE DOOR???? I MEAN SERIOUSLY! it would have been a fun scene to watch Clare or ANYONE try to prop the door open only for the prop not to have worked... THANK YOU

.

I wish I liked this book but it was so hard to get through.
For a book that is supposed to be in the horror/thriller genres it is SO SLOW and barely has any actual action or horror in it.
The plot meanders. There are so many scenes that don't add to the main story.
There were so many times I wanted to put it down but it just has so much POTENTIAL. I kept hoping it would pick up the pace and become exciting but it never does.
I'm upset because I really, really wanted to like this book. It could have been so scary and exciting. There were moments, especially with the

flipping of tenses, that it reminded me of Mike Flannigan's version of The Haunting of Hill House

, which is why I was so determined to finish it. 
A plot that had the potential to be so good, but was the most boring horror novel I've ever read.

So much time/space is wasted on the main character, Claire's insecurities. One, or two sentences expressing her not feeling worthy of Mitchell, or not a good enough friend to Abby is enough in my opinion when she's around those two, but like LINE AFTER LINE OF HER AGONIZING "oh, he's going to reject me" or "she's going to hate me" it really gets old and annoying after a while

Very slow going , slightly repetitive and jumpy from past to present with the main plot and back story. Honestly what was really happening with this house is very vague for me. I’m left with the impression of murders and ghost story.

Solid haunted house read. Some stuff that just didn't hit for me with the characters and one problem with the story but overall it was good, I read it in two days
