Not sure how to rate/review this. There are elements of this I liked, but there were others I have big problems with.

Review comes from The Pewter Wolf

Once upon a time, a Little Prince lived on a faraway planet, no bigger than himself. And even little princes grow up. One day, he leaves his planet, exploring the universe... Only to be discovered in the middle of a road by our narrator. This is the story of their meeting and their journey together...

Like I have said previously, I have never read The Little Prince so I can't tell you if this is a worthy sequel. What I can tell you is if this is a good story in its own right.

And up to a point, it is. There is something about this story that feels like a fable. There was something charming about this story.

However, there were problems and yes, I am taking issue with one of these, but that is a later paragraph so bear with.

While I was reading this, there were times when the story's message, themes and its morals were treated very heavy handed. With fables, they should be gentle. The reader should discover these morals and themes themselves, not have them forced down their throats.

What annoyed me the most about this story was religion. From what I understand, [book:The Little Prince|157993] is a story about a young prince discovering himself in the universe. Discovering what it means to be a good human being. Not once, to my research, was religion bought up. So why, oh why, was God reference? Why did our narrator and the Young Prince talk about God? It felt so out of place within the story and made me question it. Is the book saying that to be a good person, you must believe in God? If you worship any religion that wasn't Christianity (Islam, Buddhism, Sikh, Hindu to name a few), you aren't a good person? What if you are an atheist, can you still be a good person?

I admit I read quite deeply into this. I am not ashamed to say it, but it annoyed me. We live in a world filled of people who worship different faiths and people who don't believe in religion. We live in a world where tolerance is important. Where kindness is important. Where love is important. So to have a story that teach these morals and then throws in God and spiritual enlightenment, it felt a bit like a slap.

While I did like it, I feel like this has more cons than pros for me. But like I said, I am reading this as something separate as I haven't read The Little Prince so I can't say if these two work side-by-side. As a standalone for me, this isn't my cup of tea. But I'm glad I did try to read it and try something new.

Book Review:

Before I get into this review I would like to explain that earlier this year I read The Little Prince. It was a different type of story. Unique in many ways and I honestly don't think that I would ever find a book that evokes the same feelings again.
So flash forward to now, I am offered to read a "sequel" per say to the Little Prince and I say yes. Does it feel in many ways like the original story? Yes, but something was different... Very different and not in a good way.
Whereas the Little Prince felt like something I had never read before, The Return of the Young Prince just felt like it was trying on some many levels to replicate what had already been seen before. This did not really pay off, instead of being a joy to read, I found it to be over cramped with life advise to the fact that I was reading a 150-page life advice book in contrast to an actual fiction story. Some of this was nice to read but seeing it on every page was a bit boring and I wanted to stop reading it on some many occasions.
The Prince himself was also not really the centre of the story, it was mainly based on the author's own experiences rather than having a narrative. He also came across a little naive something that reading the original story I would not guess the case would be. The narrative also was not really there. It was basically a road trip novel which involved nothing but talking and although there were some parts of the story that was entertaining and had some development of the Prince's character this was few and far between and did not take up much of the novel which was quite a disappointment.
Although there was much that I dislike about the novel, there were aspects of the novel I enjoyed. Although some aspects were quite preachy, other bits of advice were nice and I enjoyed reading them and could come on board. I also feel as though it was a nice homage to the story, taking the spirit of the previous book and putting it into play. In the beginning, I did feel some of the emotions that I found in The Little Prince. The illustrations were also a nice addition to the story and often broke up the large chunks of text which were a relief from what was often normally written. The illustrations also were well-drawn and I really enjoyed them.
I know that you can tell by my review that I did not like this book but I would recommend for those who enjoyed The Little Prince as it does keep the spirit and love for the book alive for those who want to re-enter the world.

The Verdict:

The Return of the Young Prince is a great homage to the original story but fails to deliver on some aspects of the story.
