This book is incredibly interesting, but I feel like most of the important arguments are made in the introduction. I fought my way through this book, just to absorb about as much as was in the introduction. Nevertheless, it is an important and provocative book for sure.

I wish the author had spent more time discussing modern life for healthcare workers. There were detailed explanations of millworkers’ daily life, their experience of hierarchy in the mill, and even the impact their work had on their families as the industry declined. We don’t get as many descriptions of living standards as healthcare rose to replace industry, however. I think that would have been interesting.

I think most of the language is unnecessarily dense, and some of the early arguments are silly and have no bearing on the thesis. But I definitely recommend it if you have any interest in the decline of industry, the rise of healthcare, or are from Pittsburgh!!

Phenomenal read. Definitely one of the best books I’ll read this year, or ever. I wish I could give it six stars. Changed the way I view and understand the region, Healthcare, and unions. I also love any book that shows the interconnected nature of things in ways I didn’t expect.

Incredible. I know a lot about steel but nothing about healthcare and this was the best comparison of economies I've ever read.
