A twisty thriller set in NYC

There’s nothing that brings me more joy than reading about NYC- recognizing the cross streets, envisioning the buildings, knowing which section of Central Park someone lay murdered. Temple Gault’s storyline is psychotic and pulses with the intensity of the city in Scarpetta’s 6th installment. This was a good read.

I think this one had the opportunity to be the best yet but it was the worst yet. So many frustrating things like surveillance. Or lack there of. And then Lucy and Kay are just magically okay and Temple was taken care of in 15 words? Not okay.

This has not been the best book in the series, but it was a good read none-the-less. I agree with comments that the resolution was maybe a bit quick, but the scenario was believable and the build up significant. There is just something about this book that feels weaker. The most likely candidate is that everything in this case is orbiting Scarpetta. The deaths are incidental to her role. She alone is the intended victim, yet she is sheltered from Gault. Along with this, Gault is quite two dimensional. There is no whodunit in this novel, which is not a good thing.

I swear, I spent three weeks trying to finish this book and after that, I gave up. I got about 90% done and I was over it. Dr. Scarpetta spends the entire book trying to track down Teeple Gault and, according to another review, it was "resolved" in two short paragraphs at the end of the book. Maybe it's because I haven't read the original Gault story in a while, but I couldn't understand why Scarpetta was so obsessed with catching Gault. Definitely not my favorite of the series.

This book just felt so lackluster. Then after getting through the entire book and taking time to get invested in what is going on and who the characters are the end wraps up in less than a page, which at that point I was already skim reading because it just wasn't holding my attention. There are characters flaws with the main character that I don't agree with and I don't know if I will be continuing this series even though I thoroughly enjoyed the first few. If she stuck with simply the forensic murder mystery side these books would be great it is all the other stuff that drags the book down.
