I loved the free verse poems to tell the story of Johnny Cash's life, though I feel like a lot was left out -- especially when you take into account that June Carter was only mentioned here in passing.

The short lines of free verse poetry, strangely, made it harder to read because of the layout on the page.
The illustrations were lovely and emotionally stirring. The story was a bit sanitized--well, the book was intended for younger readers, so I understand leaving out marital infidelity and substance abuse. It does have the effect of making Cash a little flatter, though definitely saintlier.

Really appreciate this biography. While it concentrated on the positives of Johnny Cash's life and his early life leading up to his fame, it also did bring up some of the darker sides. I appreciate they were at least mentioned but not focused on in this biography written for kids.
The writing, done in free verse, was eloquent and the illustrations eye-catching.

In a one-sentence nutshell:
Gorgeously written and illustrated picture book biography of the man in black. I enjoyed it, but I fear not many children will be able to get into the lengthy free-verse poems detailing Cash's life. It struck me as one of those books that adults will enjoy more than children.

Hmmm, I might get this as a Christmas present for my dad. Useful for parents who want to have some books about the greats lying around the house. Keep it with the records.
