I DNF this book. I don’t really know why I bought it, but it’s really boring. Maybe I’ll try again soon, but I’m in a book slump rn

Inspired by Poe, written by MM, with some Tiger King and a flu-like virus mixed in. Sign me the fuck up

Ooh boy, I just realized this is a planned duology a day after finishing it, and I gotta say, I'm not sure how I feel about it. I didn't think of that ending as a cliffhanger, I just thought it was a badass ending to this dark af story lol. Unless the next book is the same timeline from another perspective. I wouldn't mind finding out more about the rest of the party and the flu everyone had.

So…. I ended up rushing through this book because I didn’t love it. But after finishing it, I want to know the answer. It seems to me this book Duology could have been one book. I also don’t think the cat chapters were relevant personally.

Hmmm… I guess an ultimate betrayal - get what’s coming to you vibe. What I did like is that you hear both sides of a story. One of my favorite things is listening to a couple tell the same story, because you get two perspectives. That’s what you get with this book.

Unfortunately there was just too much: drugs, date rape, bullying, sexual assault, abuse, murder, seizures, familial problems, cheating, animal abuse, violence, destruction, racism, gore, sickness - it was like by saturating the book with every “issue” it was just over the top.

I also think the level of bullying/taunting/public humiliation just left a bad taste in my mouth. I’m not sure I will read the second of this book - but I will look for the spoilers that tell me what actually “happens”

Brutal. Amazing. Wow.

I really enjoy Mindy McGinnis' writing and this book was no different! The writing gripped me the entire time. There was a few times I couldn't tell the characters apart but other than that, it was a great book.

Thank you to Katherine Tegen Books, Harper Children's, and NetGalley for providing me with an eBook copy to review.

There’s a reason Poe wrote multiple stories instead of just one. Together it’s A LOT.

Wow...this was a crazy novel. I loved all of the Edgar Allan Poe references...it made me want to go back and reread several short stories to remember all of the details...so many weaved into this world. I loved the narration through two distinct voices and it felt easy to know these two girls and their stories.

My jury is really out on this one. I appreciate so many things about the story, like the myriad of Poe references and some of the subtleties of how the mystery plays itself out. But I also know that most of my students are going to want that mystery to be a little less subtle and feel frustrated that it's not, possibly even miss the resolution. Having finished, and knowing the original, I understand this story is not really about the resolution of the mystery, but that is how it is sold.

I do think I will be thinking about this book for a while and that definitely counts fors something.

I got this audiobook because I adore Mindy McGinnis! I own every one of her books and I have loved them all and this one was just as great as those. This waa such a great thriller. The back and forth narrative made this book a bit confusing and wild but I loved it. Neither narrator seemed fully reliable which just added to the confusing whirlwind that was this book.
McGinnis is the super star when it comes to making books feel wild and brilliant with just her writing style and this book is a shinning example of that. You are racing to get answers along with Tress and Felicity. The later it gets the fast and more manic the characters get and it is brilliant making your heart race and the pages fly by. This book is just a shinning example of what a good YA thriller could be!
