This book was a lot darker than I had anticipated for a YA mystery, which wasn't necessarily a bad thing.

It has a trope I hate, which is a rift between former best friends. But the back story between Tress Montor and Felicity Turnado sucked me in. Told from multiple POV between the two friends, we uncover the history between the two girls. I found myself feeling bad for both of the girls but definitely feeling worse for one of them over the other. I put myself in her place and asked myself if I would have done what she ended up doing to her former BFF.

This book hooked me in and kept me interested up through the end.

I am so glad I waited until the second in the duology came out before I read this one. Woo boy what was a wild ride…on to the next!

This would've been perfect if it was a little bit gayer.

I’m still wavering on whether or not I really liked this book or hated it, and that’s why I’m giving it a high rating.

I believe that the best books make you feel a multitude of emotions, even if they aren’t good ones. The author made me angry, writing about two former best friends who hate and also love each other. She made me sad reading about the wild animals, the girls’ messed up lives, Felicity’s coping mechanisms. And she made me wonder, wonder how all of this was going to wrap up in a nice little bow at the end.

I’m not entirely sure the author didn’t rip up the bow and leave it in tatters in the floor. Woo boy, that ending. I’m interested to see what happens in book two, but also how the heck this story straightens out (if it even can).

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for an advanced copy!

Well, I can safely say this book [REDACTED] me up in ways I haven't processed yet.

Basically, Mindy McGinnis writes the best kind of YA-- YA that doesn't feel like it speaks down to said young adults or spells everything out for them. McGinnis' books are DARK and brutal, and she knows that young adults can handle that. This also makes them easily transferrable to adult audiences. Her other work, "The Female of the Species", is one of my favorites ever.

I loved this book, stayed up late reading it a couple nights in a row, and the ending literally made me say, "holy shit!" out loud. Few books get that reaction from me. If you're interested in horror, suspense, or just a damn good read, pick this up. I also think this would make a great film.

So upset that I have to wait however long for the sequel, but this was just fantastic and got me out of a bit of a reading rut. Time to read everything Mindy's ever written now.

(Content/trigger warnings for: animal harm/death, drug usage, torture)

If Nina LaCour is the queen of writing melancholic slow-burn books then Mindy McGinnis is the queen of compulsively readable dark YA stories. So messed up, so layered, so interesting. Both main characters, Tress and Felicity, have so much shit to deal with and make bad decisions but you can't help but want them both to live at the end. It's so so good that I just read it in one day.

CW/TW: drugs, vandalism, graphic descriptions of attacks/blood, bullying, cheating

Holy cow. I don't really know how I feel about this book, but it kept me reading. The story is a "retelling" of The Cask of Amontillado and that's what drew me in. The story is told in alternating POV and thru flashbacks. Its' a dark read, but it was compelling. The cliffhanger ending through me for a loop...I'll definitely be picking up its sequel. Recommended.

mindy mcginnis does not disappoint!!! i read this in two days through a mix of audiobook and ebook, and i found as compelling as “the female of the species.” i think mcginnis just has this uncanny way of getting to the nitty gritty of people without making it absolutely outrageous. you can tell these are high schoolers without the exasperating high school-esque cringe. many characters to love and root for. lots of jaw-dropping moments.
