I never thought that I would rate a Mindy McGinnis book so low but I honestly don't get what happened in this book. I have even more questions than I started with and no answers given

'I've got things to do, like find out what happened to my parents seven years ago.
And for that, I need manacles.'
A propulsive YA thriller inspired by the works of Edgar Allan Poe. In the basement, Tress slowly entombs her former BFF, Felicity, behind a brick wall. Above them, a panther prowls the perimeter of a Halloween party. There is so much tension and such a sense of urgency! That ending left me with my mouth open and scrambling to grab the second book in the duology.
'The average brick is two inches tall. Felicity is five foot five. How many bricks will it take for her former best friend to seal her into a wall.'

This wasn't what I was expecting but I enjoyed it. I loved the Poe inspiration and the modern YA spin McGinnis adds to it.
There's a lot of drama and teen angst within the story. The characters aren't particularly likable and that really worked with the darker story. I thought the Cat POV was really interesting.
It has a good ending that leaves me anticipating the second book while not feeling like the story was abruptly cut off ( like I find some duologies do).

Tress blames former childhood friend, Felicity, for the car accident that caused the disappearance of her parents and subsequently changed her life. Felicity is a beautiful and popular teen who struggles with survivors’ guilt and a seizure disorder that she feels she must conceal from the people in the town. Tress lost everything after her parents’ death- her money, her home and is forced to live with her terrible Grandpa Cecil, an abusive alcoholic who runs a seemingly illegal zoo with exotic animals. Tress is poor and makes money selling drugs while Felicity looks like she is thriving (although she is using drugs to cope with her unhappy life). Tress decides to get the answers to what happened on the night of her parents’ accident. She picks a Halloween party in an abandoned home as the spot to coerce Felicity into telling her the truth by walling her up in a basement a la The Cask of Amontillado. Several things occur at this party and things definitely do not go as planned which makes for a very interesting cliff-hanger at the end of the book. The tone of this book is very reminiscent of the author’s [b:The Female of the Species|25812109|The Female of the Species|Mindy McGinnis|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1455917180l/25812109._SY75_.jpg|45668311], which I also enjoyed.

This was a great ride while I was in it, but doesn’t feel like there is much staying power for me. I really appreciate how the characters’ personalities and pasts are steadily revealed so we learn no one is good, and everyone has something to hide.
I liked it but it was a little bit weird? Like, the POV of the panther, wtf was that exactly?

Wildly creepy, but good. I can't wait to see what happens in the sequel - holy moly!
