When I heard that this was loosely based on The Cask of Amontillado I was so intrigued, and this book was a wild ride. A YA horror/thriller that requires the usual suspension of disbelief of the genre, I was sucked into the story and appreciated how dark it got for a YA book. I appreciated the numerous Poe easter eggs and am really looking forward to the sequel.
I was definitely drawn into this book based on the connections to Edgar Allen Poe. As a former English teacher, I have always been intrigued by Poe's life and stories so I loved the little references sprinkled throughout this book. I loved the plot, the characters, and as a teacher, I saw so many of my students reflected in Tress and Felicity.
Now that I have finished the book, I cannot wait to read part two. So many threads still unraveled and I have to know how it ends up!

God, Mindy McGinnis is such a tremendous writer. I'm so happy she writes YA. If it weren't for her (and a few others -- Katrina Leno and Courtney Summers come to mind) I would've given up reading YA entirely.
This works fine as a standalone, but taken in concert with its sequel, it's a tour de force.

I did not know this was a duology. So I'm upset at the ending. I thought the cats POV was weird. In my search to understand the ending I can't across that this was a retelling of Edgar AllenPoe, the cask of amontillado. I think I've read this before which is why the buried alive in the wall thing was familiar but I don't remember the rest of it. Welp I'll be requesting the sequel
That... was... weird. This book was just strange.. and pointless... I know the ending was meant to be like a shock ending, but seriously, it was all for nothing!! Tress didn’t get her answers, Felicity was stuck in a wall because Tress was too stupid to check for a pulse. Hugh ended up being a nothing character that didn’t add the ending whatsoever, he was just a nice guy that was sort of there for both of them... the panther was unnecessary. It kept me wanting to know what happened, but we didn’t even find out what happened to her parents. The ending just made me angry, not for the characters, but because we got zero answers to anything. 2 stars because it kept me entertained but there was seriously no point to this book whatsoever.
