This book is about two high school girls, Tressa and Felicity, who used to be best friends. One night Tressa’s parents are driving Felicity home when they disappear. Felicity is found, but she can’t remember what happened. Tressa is sent to live with her Tiger King like grandfather and her life makes a complete change from what she knew before.

The story is told between the past and present and both girls’ perspectives. There is also a few chapters from a quite unique perspective.

Being that this is Mindy McGinnis, this book is dark and gritty and hits on some tough situations for teens. Mindy has done a fabulous job taking from Edgar Allen Poe and creating a modern day story. If you are a Poe fan, you will love the references.

I really enjoyed this book and can’t wait for the sequel. Thank you NetGalley for the free audio in exchange for an honest review.

Cats are eternal beings who only speak in free form poetry. I’m glad someone else recognizes it.

WHAT THE FUCCKKKKK OH MY GOD

Mindy McGinnis has made my heart ACHE for all the characters! (Except Gretchen). I’m so glad the second book is already out.

**Thanks to Netgalley and Harper Audio for an ARC of this voice galley**

This is my first Mindy McGinnis book, and I have a cursory knowledge of Poe's stories, so I came to this book pretty fresh (see: low expectations, just ready to enjoy the ride).

Considering I devoured this book in one night, I'd say I liked it. I actually paused at one point, wondering how deep I was into this book, and realized I was over 70 percent of the way through! It was fast-paced but still managed to spend an appropriate amount of time on character development (motivation and justifications).

The shifting narrators were equally thrilling to follow, and helped to keep the plot constantly pushing forward.

I'll admit, a lot of the Poe-ness probably went over my head, but I appreciated the few touchstones that I did recognize.

Really enjoyed this one. I'll likely peruse this author's back catalogue.

I loved the short chapters so much! The flashbacks and drama were amazing. Both Tress and Felicity were amazing characters that you could hate and love at the same time. Definitely going to pick up the sequel. Eventually because books are expensive.

This book started off slow but wow it took a turn. It wasn't fast paced but still went quickly because of the flashbacks. Truthfully, didn't love the ending but it felt like the right ending. I would definitely read more from this author.
