This was WILD. I usually read every single Mindy McGinnis that comes across my desk as soon as it is released, but for some reason I held off on this one until now. As if I doubted that I would like Mindy McGinnis's absolutely batshit take on The Cask of Amontillado except with teenage girls?? Shame on me. This is so weird and so intense and I finished it over the course of an evening and grabbed the second book the very next day.

3.5. It would be a 4 except the more the plot unfolded the less I cared about Tress and more about Felicity. I know it sucks to not know what happened to your parent's the night they went missing and Felicity was the only one there, but she was also a child! Who had trauma issues because of years of witnessing her own parents abuse. NOW, her losing Goldie would have killed me too, because I love my dog, and if she hadn't come to her house high with her friends to tag a sign then it wouldn't of happened. Hate her forever yes, but geez plotting a murder, planning on entombing her if she didn't' know, that can't be justified not to me.
A really great modern take on Edgar Allen Poe's "The Cask of Amontillado" (and also "The Masque of Red Death"???). I loved how the author kept true to the unreliable narrator factor of the original story while still managing to give a complete(ish) story to the audience. A really great mystery/suspense novel and I'm excited to read the next one!
YES: an insane retelling of a Poe classic, with fun Poe easter-eggs hidden throughout. An intense cliffhanger means teens will need the sequel immediately. Another McGinnis that pulls no punches, and just as compelling as Heroine.
I stumbled upon this book when browsing the Libby app for an audiobook, and I did not know it was going to be a two-parter. So when it abruptly ended, I was PISSED. But, then I read there was another, and I breathed a sigh of relief. It's important that you know this, dear potential reader, because this first book ends at a time when there is just so much going on, you simply have to keep going. I loved this story, and I enjoyed listening to it as an audiobook especially. You'd like this story if you love Edgar Allen Poe, murder mysteries, and terrible people doing terrible things.
