It was tough to get through. But that was the point. It felt like the same thing, never-ending. The whole book was just grief, and nothing else, just making you want something more than that. It was the perfect display of what grief can be for some people.

Just the same thing every day: lay in bed. cry. sleep. over and over again.

The addition of Q’s mother’s display of pure cruelty was the perfect display of how everyone’s grief is different. And I use “perfect” begrudgingly because my heart hurt more and more every time Aspen was mentioned. Heartbreaking.

Simply put - this is a deeply beautiful account of the vast range of emotional reactions to suicide, and the disparate forms love & support & grief might take. Our narrator is understandably distraught over her husband’s death; his mother’s response, extreme in its ugly vindictiveness, is also shown to be understandable, in a way. Everyone in Q’s orbit is shaken by his death but shows their sorrow in different ways, leaving his widow feeling even more unmoored as she tries (or doesn’t) to find a path forward.
We are treated to the sweet and sometimes bittersweet history of this couple and with that we see the unfolding of characters that reveals layers of relationships. Nwabineli’s writing is subtly astute in the ways it shows growth in even the slightest of characters - she makes us notice everyone and compels us consider their stories within our own stories while allowing connections we might otherwise resist.

Wow, this book is powerful. I admit I struggled with this book at times due to having lost someone close to me only a year ago. The writing was immersive and emotional. I felt Eve’s pain and resonated with her struggle of moving on. This book captured the emotional and physical struggles of moving on. The authors style of writing had me captivated from the start. The ending felt a bit rushed to me, hence my rating.
