this book is so incredible sad, the way grief is portrayed is truly heartbreaking
the characters are flawed and complicated which made them realistic

‘i could walk inside and find him sitting there waiting for me, that bemused expression on his face as if i have no reason to be gutted. anything seems possible when you’re on the wrong side of a door’

⚠️ tw: this book discusses suicide and grief in depth

i could summarise both this book, and my feelings about it as ‘if i don’t laugh i’ll cry’…

i have never been so intrenched in a characters grief like this. the separation between eve and i felt paper thin, literally.

i felt every single thing she felt, the blinding loss of Q, the stares of strangers, the overwhelm of her family and friends, her apathy and need for closure.

this is a testament to nwabineli’s writing.

this book is not only a devastating study of one woman’s journey with grief, viceral and tangible in all its sensory detail, it’s also one on friendship, family and the love that exists there.

and the humour!!! onyi mentioned last week that it’s very typical of us to try and find humour in difficult times. the sharp tangy humour in this book, will pry a smile out of you despite the pain like an oyster. it was blended so beautifully as to not be jarring but offer moments of respite.

i cannot say enough good things about this book really. the secondary characters (especially nate) are wonderful, the writing is beautiful , eve & q are nuanced but overwhelmingly loveable. prepare yourself though and take it slow❤️‍🩹
