this book was absolutely torture to read. I have never in my life read a book where one moment I’m excited, thinking that maybe I’ve come across a good chapter, only for it to be the most underwhelming piece of work ever. no climax. some chapters caught my attention, only for like 5 seconds before I realized how much I’d started to hate it. it takes me so long to hate a book and god damn did I hate this one. props to her writing style though I guess, it felt experimental and not all the same.

I will be looking in basements, for lovers and neglected parts of myself. I’ll be sure to give them all a kiss.
I don't know man, I really tried to like this. Maybe I'm just not smart enough to get it, but it felt like every story was underdeveloped or just out of my reach, which was frustrating. The Resident was the worst (so pretentious). I feel like this book was only vibes but the vibes weren't even enticing at all.
This fell a bit short for me, probably because I kept comparing it to Dream House and similar story collections I’ve read lately. It definitely should’ve been a pre-Halloween read because with winter approaching I’m just starting to crave stuff that’s less eery and more cozy.
The writing and ideas are objectively good though so I think this was just bad timing on my part. It’s me, not you

Unfortunately, none of these stories particularly grabbed me. They were well-written and I appreciated Machado's writing style, but I tend to struggle with horror short-stories; I want a longer story that I can sink into. I think these are great for people who enjoy short-stories, but I am not that person for the most part.
