i wanted to like it SO BAD. there were stories in this book that i was absolutely obsessed with and will be thinking about for a long time. particularly mothers and the husband stitch. but for the highlights of the book there were extreme lowlights too. like the 2 hours of confusing Law and Order SVU fan fiction that just made me feel so lost. it just stopped being fun to read.

Machado's writing felt like a manic episode. At first I enjoyed it, and then as I kept experiencing it I wanted it to be over. For me, each story bled into the other. The writing never truly varied making it feel like it was the same woman experiencing different scenarios in different versions of her life. Maybe that was the goal of the book. I enjoyed The Husband Stitch and Inventory, but I think Especially Heinous ruined the rest of the book for me.

DNF. This book has been on my list for years, but I checked out after the first two stories. I don't know if it's bad, but every other paragraph is about sex which was really off-putting for me.
