This is an anthology that would be much better to dip in and out of, it is hard to fully absorb oneself in it in a traditional page-turner way. With over 300 fables, it is no surprise that not all of these are equally as meaningful and thought provoking. Very short and a huge variety of messages, some more pithy and impactful than others making it pretty hit and miss each time.
According to the synopsis or various other sources this work is attributed to a slave who lived about 2000 or so years ago. It's basically a collection of fables mainly featuring animals with a few humans thrown in for good measure some of the time and at the end comes...and the moral to the story is. Remembering my childhood and my mother saying “Do unto others as you have them do unto you”..her Golden Rule..this was the source of her “sayings” to be sure. In any culture or society there must be rules for all people to get along and the source is usually presented in either a religious book or other form. Very enjoyable and entertaining.
Beautifully illustrated and a wonderful edition of Aesop's Fables. Not all of them have moral to the story and some feel too modern to be attributed to Aesop but none the less I enjoyed the edition.
