this book has been sitting on my shelves for 2 years. i was waiting for the right time, and last week i picked it up and got sucked into this family who i already miss dearly.

Heart wrenching, as most stories from WWII are, and, being based on the author’s actual family, it’s especially impressive considering everything that all of the different family members did, lived through and endured. However, because the story followed so many people over the entire war, the author had to gloss over so many months and details that I didn’t feel as emotionally invested as I have in other, similar stories. Worth the read (though maybe not on your relaxing, summer vacation as I did).

I want to give this book 5 stars because the story is insane. You wouldn’t think it to be true at all, but one of the character’s granddaughter really did a great job doing her research and storytelling. The only reason for the 4 stars (I would even round to 4 1/2) is because it’s a big family which obviously isn’t a problem, but it was hard to sometimes keep track of who was who and where. Thankfully there’s a family tree at the start which I could refer to.
