I am sort of baffled by the amount of 5 star reviews... and maybe they just hyped this book up too much because I came in with high expectations that it did not come close to living up to. This book was very slow for me. I almost stopped reading it when I was halfway through, but many of the reviews said the 2nd half was better. It did get a little better in the 2nd half, but not enough to be redeeming. It was also difficult to keep track of all the different characters. Underwhelmed. The Nightingale and Lilac Girls were far better WWII books in my opinion. 2.5 ⭐️

One of the best survivors stories I’ve read in the sense that a family was able to come together, by sheer luck out of so many. Heartbreaking, and a much different look into the experiences of a Jewish Family, struggling to stay one step ahead of destruction and death. The author, as well as the recounting of experiences, paid great homage to those who were not the lucky ones. Beautiful.

This one has me hooked from start to end. It’s a historical fiction book based on the authors real family and how they survived World War 2. This one was heart wrenching but hard to put down.

This book was about a Polish Jewish family and their collective experience of WWII. Although these stories are heartbreaking at times, their will for survival was amazing. I enjoyed what I thought was historical fiction, but upon listening to the author's note at the end, found out that this is her family's story. I had goosebumps.
The narrator of this audiobook was excellent as well.
