A fun collection of short stories that hearken back to the best of '80s epic fantasy (with a splash of modern urban fantasy thrown in for good measure). If you're a fan of Terry Brooks, Stephen Donaldons, Barbara Hambly, or Raymond Feist, you'll find a lot to love about Speakman's stories set in the fey land of Annwn. Speakman has a flair for action, gorgeous set pieces, and doesn't skimp on the magic. In other words, it's right up my alley.

I haven't read Speakman's The Dark Thorn, but, outside of the first story, I didn't have any issues enjoying the tales here, though they're clearly setting up events to come in the second book of the trilogy, The Everwinter Wraith.

My only real complaint is that I would have liked to have seen more women in the stories. The final story, The White Rose Thief, the standout story in the collection, features a cast chock full of strong, interesting women, which makes their exclusion from the other stories more obvious.

Recommended for anyone looking for adventure, fun, and good ol' fashion epic fantasy. Loved it! Greatly looking forward to going back to The Dark Thorn and joining those waiting eagerly for The Everwinter Wraith.
