i’m a bit cautious about giving this book such a high rating. i really enjoyed it and i also learned a lot, but i always get a bit apprehensive when someone else is telling a story that is not about them. id have liked more information on the author’s sources, to know how much of the story was true, who she spoke to or any interviews she used. however it’s really well written and i enjoyed the characters a lot, plus she does classify it as fiction so there is wiggle room there.

A beautiful fictionalized telling of the courageous Mirabel sisters and the nightmare that Dominican’s endured during Trujillo’s dictatorship. An emotional yet inspiring journey that will require some tissues as you read but “a novel is not, after all, a historical document, but a way to travel through the human heart”

Written from the perspective of all 4 Mirabel sisters, the book details the girls lives in the Dominican Republic under the dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo. The fictious (though almost historically accurate events) follow the sisters (Patria, Dedé, Minerva, and Maria Teresa) from a young age up until the calculated deaths of Patria, Minerva, and Maria Teresa. The 3 sisters were active members of the Underground Resistance opposing Trujillo's regime. Growing up in the United States, the history taught to us were regarding dictatorships that eventually spun out of control. With the Dominican Republic, Trujillo kept decent relations with the US and the US turned a blind eye to the supposedly "Free country but will be killed by anyone opposing the leader of the Free World Trujillo.
