I liked this book. It's like a time travel to a life you miss and then skip to what you have now. I love how even after the many voices Andrea hears throughout her childhood, she only listened to what she needed to and decided things on her own. All things in the end would not have been in her way without the people who supported her,... and then there was Pablo.

Being part Puerto Rican meant I was instantly interested in reading this book even though I’m not normally someone that loves a coming of age story. (I even DNFed a book earlier this year because I didn’t realize it was coming of age.) I think the audiobook was really well done because you could just hear the emotions of the characters when they spoke and the tid bits in Spanish felt all the more realistic. If I’m being totally honest, I feel like there could have been more Spanish in there especially the scenes set back in Puerto Rico, but I understand this wasn’t a fully bilingual book and mostly in English (at least the version I read).
I loved the characters and especially Andrea, our main character. Watching her grow up in different places, struggling with her identity felt so real and pulled some emotional heartstrings. It just felt like an easy read since I actually found myself interested in her life story and wanted to follow her growing up and navigating life. I was certainly not expecting what happened with her brother, so it almost felt like a plot twist even though this doesn’t necessarily feel like a genre that does that sort of thing. It just goes to show that anything can happen in life and Andrea’s efforts to love and keep her family whole are to be commended.
A very solid 4/5 from me. Can’t really explain why it’s not a 5, except maybe the fact that I’m not super keen on the genre, but I truly don’t find anything flawed or irritating in the book.

Really enjoyed this story! The conversations were a bit unrealistic at times but I still really enjoyed. It gives a great insight into the Latino American experience

I loved parts of this book so much, but then other parts fell a little flat. However I look forward to reading more from this author, as this is her first novel.
I loved the overall storyline of a family caught between their birthplace in Puerto Rico to their home and years in an old Massachusetts mill town. The dynamics between the family were vividly written and beautiful. The pervasive feeling of “otherness” that they felt, never quite fitting into US mainland culture or Puerto Rican culture, was also written effectively.
