Some interesting ideas at play here but I feel disconnected from most of the characters after reading--Sedgwick never really lets us inside of their heads. I find myself just not quite able to suspend my disbelief that this story would happen, that people would act like this--it's over the top. Good for Sedgwick for not demonizing the Native Americans here and I did enjoy reading this more than I expected. But while it's certainly pleasant, it doesn't go as far as it could and feels a bit shallow ultimately. Read for English 252 Fall 2013.

At first I really didn't like this book, I found the opening chapter(s) really boring and just really actionless. It was hard to figure out where exactly this book was going. But as the book went on and my first class reading assignment of it ended with a baby being flung against the side of the house as a death I was hooked. There were quiet a few slow and frustrating parts (mostly where ever Jennet or Ester was present) but it moved smoothly. The narrative was unique as that the narrator was actually speaking to you, but I didn't exactly like being told how to 'think or feel' about some of the certain situations within the novel. I did like the outcome of the novel where everyone got what they deserved. Jennet's death was funny and unexpected (but enjoyable because of her annoyance through out the novel) and that Faith was able to be reuinited with her husband as Magawisca was able to be reuintied with her family. Ester finally did something right (besides being a good Purtian) in leaving to allow Everell and Hope to be united in marriage is everyone had obviously hinted at during the entire novel. Normally I don't like early american literature (having read this through a college class I really had no choice to read this) but this book was often enjoyable and unqiue in every way possible.

i read this book for an american lit class, but i enjoyed it. thought it was cool how Sedgwick historicized (? might not be the right word) the events by pulling in figures from that time period and having them interact with the main characters. My favorite character was Rosa, and i simultaneously hate and love her ending.
