For fans of BEFORE THE COFFEE GETS COLD and WATER MOON, Marigold Mind Laundry tells the story of a woman with the ability to ease other’s past pains and regrets and the people who she helps.

An honest and yet hopeful look at what hurts us and how we chose to go on living despite it all. I loved this story. While I didn’t cry or choke up, the stories resonated with me and each character was compelling. The magical elements were easy to understand and well executed and left me feeling as refreshed as the clean laundry. A lovely story that I picked up just in the right time.

Do you ever wish that you could wash away bad memories like stains on a dirty shirt? This is an enchanting book following Jieun, owner of a magical laundromat, and her customers as they cope with trauma, loss, and the passage of time using friendship and magic.

The book is a bit repetitive when meeting each customer, but later picks up. Jieun sometimes uses corny messages to encourage her customers (such as smiling to trick your brain into being happy), which is a bit basic, but sometimes we need that reminder. The end is not very satisfying, but is sweet nonetheless.

I would be interested to see what folks who read this in the original Korean thought of this book. There’s a lot that seems inconsistently translated/formatted across the book, and a lot of things that seem lost in translation to me.

It's a great premise, but there are certain parts that are lost in translation. In areas where you can tell that the messaging was meant to be reflective and picturesque, it can come off as very heavy-headed, which took me out of the story. Overall I really liked it, and enjoyed the moments of reflection in why different characters came to the laundry, but I probably won't read it again.
