I was moderately engaged until the ending. Why would you assume your five year old had murdered someone? Or that it was even possible for a five year old to kill a healthy sixteen year old? Then assume the police would put her away until age eighteen? She’s FIVE. Great job ruining your lives.
Maggie goes over to Dane’s place to apologize for thinking he was the killer after he tried to grab her, then grabs a knife and chases her at top speed around the house?!?! And he just quietly shuts the door in her face. Oh, Maggie, how dare you? Ugh.

Yesssss, this thriller just pulled me out of a *slight* reading slump brought on by reading others that were more lackluster. I mostly listened to the audiobook, which was actually great! There’s a narrator for both perspectives - the book and Maggie.

This one gave me that same oh. my. gosh. feeling I felt when reading Final Girls that I’ve just been longing to feel again!

This is probably more like a 3.5 rounded to a 4. I was fairly bored throughout this book. It started really slow and I didn't find it particularly scary. There was some parts that were... I guess we'll call them eerie, but I read it entirely at night and never once had trouble falling or staying asleep.

There was a major disconnect in this book for me. I think it was the characterization. Maggie was particularly flat and I felt nothing tug me to feel for her or her family. The plot was clever and the writing was good, so the book earned all of it's stars based on those facts alone.

Also... what's up with the title? It makes no sense. Did someone use one of those random title generators and think, "Hmm... this sounds good for a horror novel!" Kind of a random note, but did anyone else find the connections to Haunting of Hill House a little too coincidental? C'mon, sir. No one does it like Queen Shirley.

Not sure I'll try another Riley Sager book, but you never know. Overall, it was just okay for me.
