I loved this book! The descriptions were beautiful and using the house as a framing device for the story is amazing and well executed.

After loving Tom Lake, I wanted to try Dutch House and I’m so glad I did. This story is a different style than my typical read, but I really loved the sweeping family epic while still drilling deep into the details story and characters. Ann Patchett has a beautiful way with words and character development and I really love her style and stories. I don’t always love stories that jump chronologically but I really liked the delivery in The Dutch House.

I loved the sibling relationship and bond and I could listen to Danny and Maeve’s banter all day.

Tom Hanks’ performance was marvelous and I absolutely think audio is the way to go with this one. I’ll be thinking about this story for a long time.

how does the write these things? she just takes all the tiniest thoughts and noticings from the whole world and compiles it into these sagas of complexity and depth. this book is so simple. it’s just life. no crazy twists and no crimes of passion or explosive love stories. the world looks different through her eyes.

I only chose this because Tom Hanks narrates and everyone I know who’s read/heard it loved it. I immediately was interested in the story as he told it, but had to look up what it was even about.  I’m unsure if I would have actually read it, certainly not in 3 days and not likely at the top of my TBR but I’m so glad I got the audio! It is such a touching story but not sure I would have made the same decision as Maeve at the end.
