Simply could not care. Can’t remember when I completely checked out, but couldn’t bring myself to finish this.

Románový diptych a vlastně i celý svůj autorský odkaz zakončil Cormac McCarthy pro něj typickým, dokonale přesným dialogem, ve kterém není snad jediné slovo navíc.
Pro mne trochu smutný, nostalgií prostoupený rozhovor lékaře a pacientky, ve kterém má pacientka jednoznačně navrch. Matematika, kvantová mechanika, filozofie a černý humor, pokud má čtenář s něčím z toho větší problém, nebude se mu Stella Maris číst snadno, v opačném případě ho čeká hloubavé počtení, které se mu před očima mihne rychleji než vlak Sunset Limited a jež zanechá spousty podnětných úvah pro čas strávený přemýšlením... což je závěr, který bez debat plně zapadá do autorovi předchozí tvorby.

quick read with nice tension between the two characters, but the trope of the crazy genius is milked so hard and is just quite boring. it’s clear that the author doesn’t understand all the concepts he has Alicia bang on about. also the incest “twist” just isn’t that surprising or interesting. quite meh all in all

I actually read Cormac McCarthy's new complimentary novels out of order, staring with Stella Maris, and I'm kind of glad I did (I'm currently reading Passenger). The brevity of this novel helped ease me into the tragic story of the Western siblings, and I got to know and feel along with Alicia in her time at Stella Maris. A friend of mine started Passenger and struggled with all the characters, and the interspersed scenes with Alicia and the kid and his cohorts. I found Alicia's conversations with her therapist Dr. Cohen compelling, and reading in this order gave me better context and understanding of those scenes in The Passenger. I listened to the audiobook and the two readers did a wonderful job on delivery, although some of the material in the discourse on philosophy and mathematics and music was so dense that I wished I was reading a physical book so I could put it down and look up references.
To me, this book hearkened back to my experiences reading The Bell Jar and Proof. All three stories are raw in their emotional and psychological expression of grief and (in the case of The Bell Jar and Stella Maris) mental instability when it accompanies a beautiful mind. Alicia is a stunning character, well fleshed-out. If you enjoy stories that are philosophical and introspective, that plumb the depths of existential crisis and sorrow, then this book is for you. 4.5 stars rounded up to 5 because McCarthy is a true literary genius and I am so glad to have fresh material from him in my hands.

More experimental than the first book and even less traditional plot lines. Lost me a bit in the second half. Still a one of a kind writer and reading experience
