I do not think reading this added much to my reading of The Passenger. Maybe if these chapters were interleaved with The Passenger’s chapters I would have found them more interesting, been pulled in more with the difference between physics and mathematics, say.
I read this back to back with The Passenger and certainly recommend doing it that way. It's cited as a coda but I found it far more of a close companion piece. It underlined many things I found in The Passenger and expanded on a good deal of Alicia's story. Despite its dense and sometimes demanding ideas, I found it a very easy and surprisingly enjoyable read.

A quicker read than The Passenger, all of it dialogue between Alicia and her psychologist. It added to The Passenger without really illuminating much of it. Can't say I fully made heads or tails out of either one, but still intriguing reads. Certainly an odd, cerebral pair of books to go out on.
I consider myself to be a rather intelligent person. I am an engineer by trade and have taken multiple mathematics and physics courses. For the life of me, I couldn't follow any of the mathematics information presented for around half of this book. Unless the vast majority of readers of this book are some kind of advanced mathematical experts, I don't understand why you would give this book glowing 5-star reviews. How can you be so high on something when you literally can't understand the majority of the information being presented? I get it's Cormac Mccarthy and he's supposed to be some type of literary God, but this, along with The Passenger, comes off as some grand mathematics vanity novels. I don't care how "beautiful the prose is" or whatever. If you can't follow what's being discussed, how do you find it entertaining?
Olisi ehkä pitänyt lukea englanniksi, ja liian myöhään tajusin tämän olevan toinen osa kirjaparia. Ehkä luen toisen joskus, ehkä tämänkin joskus alkuperäiskielellä.
Eh, I don't know about this book. And, believe me, I am a huge fan of Cormac McCarthy.
I won't give this a star rating yet because, lol, in typical fashion I have read the second book first and have yet to read the first book. Once I read the first book I will decide if this second book makes more sense with the addition of the backstory. From what I can tell from others' reviews the answer will be no. But in order to be fair and thorough I will withhold my rating.
All that said, this, as it stands right now, is not a very good book. It is not a Suttree that's for sure. I'm not sure what the purpose of something like this is other than to connect genius with mental illness? Or genius with obsession? Or finite geniuses obsessively contemplating the infinite with madness? Or, or something. People who "think too much" about the infinite or existence or reality drive themselves crazy? Or geniuses who create a bomb to destroy the world and don't feel guilty about it with evil? Shiiiittt. I don't know. This was just like blah blah blah. But, maybe once I read the first book I'll be able to put this one in the proper perspective. Maybe. Or perhaps I'm just not smart enough.
Did this character of Alicia even seem schizophrenic? She seemed pretty lucid (well except for all that brotherly love stuff, yuk).
Anyway I'll come back to this at some point once I read The Passenger.

“Want to read a book that consists entirely of a dialogue between a therapist and the protagonist”? “Uh….” “It’s written by Cormac McCarthy”. “Oh, then, yes, absolutely!”
