This book is entirely dialog between Alicia and a Stella Maris therapist. If you think, "I usually enjoy McCarthy's voice as the narrator, so I'm not sure I'd like a book with only character dialog," the good news is that his characters talk exactly like him.
Despite this, Alicia is still an interesting character.
I guess the two stars is because I was disappointed at how little this informed my understanding of The Passenger. Perhaps I'm asking for too much handholding, but I was hoping to discover some help in deciphering Bobby's relationships/experiences. I will re-read The Passenger anyway because I suspect I'm missing something.

4.5* rounded up.

Edit : dropped my rating down to 4 stars. While this is an very well-written novel, I definitely didn't get as much out of it as I did with The Passenger. Would still recommand.

Books can really be read in either order. The story in this book connects to the other but it isn’t a continuation. If anything it takes place before the other book. I am bummed that the other story wasn’t continued. But this was interesting in its own right.

More philosophical ramblings than a coherent plot but I still enjoyed it.

I think the most disturbing takeaway from this book and therefore Schizophrenia is that Jung pretty much thought it was a way for the brain to protect itself. Like there is something truly terrible in the unconscious that the mind isn't able to wrap its head around, language can't describe it either. So Schizophrenia is solely the brain creating a world/reality to avoid this darkness/abyss or whatever you want to call it.

"What was the dream? Or the vision or whatever it was."

"I saw through something like a judas hole into this world where there were sentinels standing at a gate and I knew that beyond the gate was something terrible and that it had power over me."

Lovecraft probably got the closest to writing about this.

Okay time for a happy book lol
