I really enjoyed the movies, but reading the books was such a slog for me. It was work. I didn't enjoy it. Since I loved the movies I know I really like the stories and the characters, so I don't quite know why I found the books so unenjoyable. I really wanted to like them, too. Just couldn't get into them.

It's my favorite book series of all time--definitely my happy place! It's definitely a literary classic and a must-read for everyone/anyone who loves fantasy.
Just a heads up for those who haven't read: it's a little different from Peter Jackson's films, and from the cartoons. It's very wordy and descriptive, and there's a lot of lore interwoven. There are overtones of Tolkien's Catholicism, Old Anglo-Saxon mythology, and Tolkien's memories of WWI (which can be a little traumatic).

I return to this series every couple of years since I first read it when I was 12 - never fails.

I am so glad I finally read this. It can be slow but when it gets good it gets so very good. Only wish we had more character development and scenes with character's interacting with each other, I love them so much I just want to hear all their small moments too.

Detailed descriptions. Deep characters.
