I finished the series!!!! The main series, anyway. We'll see when I'll get to alll the other books. If I could insert that Elmo fire gif I would (I know there's a way, but I can't be bothered right now).

It only took me, oh, ten months to finish the eight books, with some breaks in between (and that ONE book that took me 3 months to get through, let's pretend it doesn't exist).

I can still say that I love Dune, or rather the world, and some of the characters, even though from book four onwards the magic started to die a little with each book.

I think it's a series worth reading, and you can stop whenever you feel like it. My inner completionist is only partially satisfied though, I'm not sure I could stop until I read all the books, whether they suck or not.

Did this one suck? Wellllll, it was less enjoyable than the previous one, so...Brian and Kevin tried, let's give them that.

And the plot was all over the place, getting more and more ridiculous by the second. But again, I FINISHED IT WHO CARES??!!

Giving this two stars, it wasn't that terrible, and I'm glad I'm done.

MILD SPOILERS

Where do I even begin?

There were elements here I was able to ignore or have hope they’d utilize well in Hunters that just failed to do anything for me. The blatant nostalgia baiting was just as bad as the new Star Wars movies and Disney live action remakes, just done a decade earlier. I had hoped bringing the larger cast from the first book and a bit beyond would be utilized well, but to be honest, they just felt like fluff.

There was a lot of fluff really. Redundant passages or events that just dragged out way longer than they should have padded this book. This big finale from Brian and Kevin could have easily been one book, but hey, two books make more money than one.

Honestly, there are elements to like here. Brian and Kevin did have some good ideas and/or executed Frank’s ideas from his outline well. Their skill at writing action also continued to this book, making the battles a nice entertaining retreat.

All in all though, there was a lot done here that seemed to blatantly ignore or misunderstand Frank’s goals with Dune. It’s tragic that Brian decided to end his father’s series, one created to warn against the dangers of a single charismatic leader, by having everything resolved perfectly by an all powerful, perfect Kwisatz Haderach. It felt more like a fairy tale, Hollywood blockbuster ending than the conclusion to Frank’s sweeping philosophical scifi masterpiece. Gross.

This is the last novel of the original series and it is a marvel of storytelling and conclusion. I do not understand how these have not been made into a multi year series like The Expanse.
i like the shorter chapter format. I like the continued plot twists and developments. The netire series is a musing on memory, from a variety of angles and cultural extrapolations. Recommended.

now on to the prequels

Once again if it was possible to rate books in the negative I would do so.

This...atrocity gives new meaning to phrases like "Nuke it from orbit" or "Kill it with fire". I would recommend nuking it from orbit while killing it with dragonfire and then shooting the remnant ashes into the Sun.

What can I say? After a long, boring narrative comprising of characters being stupid and talking in stilted dialogue the book climaxes in a deus ex machina to end all deus ex machinas. Or rather a cluster of deus ex machinas. The ending is possibly the worst this series could have.

Avoid this and all other works by these two people like hell. I certainly will.
